About Us

Our Story

Jonathan’s House is a mission in the Central African Republic (CAR). First established in 2012 under the leadership of Carter Strand, the ministry serves local families, widows, and orphans displaced by the long civil war in the CAR.

Jonathan’s House operates an orphanage that currently houses around 50 infants, toddlers, and school age children. Some children have no family to care for them. Others need Jonathan's House to step in temporarily to help when food or medical care isn't available. We always work to reunite those children back with their families as soon as we can.

JHO operates a Christian school in the community, which educates and feeds roughly 450 students in grades 1-6. For many children, this is the only meal they receive in a day. Jonathan’s House also operates a medical clinic in which members of the community are able to receive quality health care at a very low price. Families in crisis and rescued children are able to receive immediate medical care for the life-threatening conditions that come with malnourishment. The goal of the mission is to minister in the name of Christ, offering the hope of the gospel for eternal needs while meeting the temporary needs of the moment.

The crisis in this area of the world can feel overwhelming. We need a growing base of regular supporters. Would you become a monthly donor?

Our Ministry Staff

  • Samuel Massengue

    JONATHAN’S HOUSE NATIONAL DIRECTOR

“Papa Samuel,” as he is called all over the JH campus. is loved by children and staff alike. He and his wife Nelly have 2 of their own children but he knows how to make every child feel like his own. In 2015 Samuel began working for Jonathan’s House and his integrity and zeal for the Lord was exactly what was needed to carry the work forward.

  • Donna Bixby

    JONATHAN’S HOUSE INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR

Donna Bixby was born to missionary parents in the Central African Republic, was raised in France, and then became a French teacher in South Carolina. When she heard an orphanage had been founded to help provide safety, education, and spiritual guidance to war orphans in CAR on the very property where she spent her first years, she went to visit. God made it evident that he was calling her to help in this ministry and she moved to CAR in 2020. With her background in education and her ability to speak French and understand Sango, she is equipped to help in ways only God could have orchestrated.

  • Dr. Eli

    MEDICAL CLINIC DOCTOR

Dr. Eli began working at Jonathan’s House in 2022. He and his wife just had their 2nd child. Dr. Eli is the only MD that works at the clinic. He is assisted by a nurse, several nurses aides and midwives, a lab technician and a pharmacist. He is often graciously available after clinic hours, especially for our JH kids and staff families.

  • Evariste

    ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DIRECTOR

Evariste began teaching at the Christian School run by Jonathan’s House in 2018. After the previous director retired over the summer, the school needed a new director who understood the school environment and the needs of the students and teachers. Evariste stepped into this administrative role in the fall of 2023.

  • Dijos

    LOGISTICS COORDINATOR & CHAUFFER

When Donna bought a car to drive back and forth between the village of Sibut and the capital city of Bangui, she was encouraged to hire a chauffeur. Djos had previously driven a rented vehicle for JH and came recommended as an honest and reliable man. Since his hiring in 2022, he has proven to possess both wisdom and reliability. His responsibilities have grown to include logistics for Jonathan’s House. “Papa Djos” loves the children at JH and they can be heard loudly cheering when he drives up.

  • Eliel

    ACCOUNTANT & TEEN MENTOR

In 2022, Jonathan’s House was in need of an accountant and a godly woman who could be a watchful big sister in the “Big House” where the girls from preschool to high school sleep, so Eliel joined the team. Eliel’s love of God and genuine joy have made her a great role model for the teens. She is both well educated and honest. Once again, God sent just the right person at just the right time.

  • Ulriche

    HUMAN RESOURCES

Jonathan’s House employs over 80 people in many different capacities. Some are teachers, some are childcare assistants (“aunties”), some do laundry by hand, others cook all the meals over open fires, still others are guards, nurses, midwives, field workers or maintenance men. Ulriche was hired in 2022 to manage the human resources side of the ministry.

Jesus’ love motivates our hardworking team.
With your help, we can rescue and nurture these precious children.
